What are Participants?

 Reference to the ER Relationship, I did not get the concept of Participants. Kindly explain in detail with atleast one example.

Participants are the Entities involved in the entity relationship diagram. For example in STUDENT and INSTRUCTOR relationship there would be two participants named STUDENT and INSTRUCTOR.
