Why devices cant be communicated without protocol?

Protocols are set of rules that describe that how can we communicate .It represent an agreement between the communicating devices, Without protocols devices can be connected but can’t communicate, just like a person that can speak and understand French is not able to talk to person that knows only Japanese, so these can communicate only when they know the same language (protocol).
