Explain term Service of flooding attack

Kindly explain the term Service of flooding attack.

By flooding  attack we mean lots of viruses are being sent to a system or in case of ping there are a lot of ping commands being executed then obviously that will slow the access to the server and once the connection limit is reached then it will no longer be able to provide services to the users.
