Preferential listening is affected by a person's beliefs, interests, or emotions. Listeners may prefer to listen for what they want to listen. A listener Personal background, experiences, habits etc distorts the speaker's intended meaning into what the listener really wants to hear. Preferential listening always results in miscommunication.
