What is shift operation?

The shift operation is used to shift the binary values i.e. bits to the left one by one in the CRC hardware or the register it works like When the bit on most left is zero it just shift left that bit and brings in next bit. When the bit on most left is 1 the XOR operation is done and that bit with divisor and shifts it to the left and brings in the next bit.
