Animal Activist: Rod Coronado sentenced to 8 months in prison

Animal activist Rodney Coronado was sentenced to eight months in prison and three years of supervised probation for his role in the disruption of a 2004 mountain lion hunt in Sabino Canyon, Arizona.

The three years probation order will mean that Coronado is effectively banned from associating with any organizations the state deems to be unacceptable. This has been designated as any group that is associated with violence. It is still unclear what the term violence means as Rod Coronado was accused at his trial of being involved in violent acts. The violent acts referred to in the trial were the dismantling of a lion trap and spreading feline urine.

History of Rod Coronado in 1995:

Coronado was previously jailed in 1995 for an attack on research facilities at Michigan State University, causing $125,000 worth of damage and destroying 32 years of research data, as part of the Animal Liberation Front's "Operation Bite Back," a series of attacks on animal testing and fur facilities in the United States during the 1990s.

Who Was Rod Coronado:

Coronado lives in Tucson, Arizona and has a long history of activism. In 1985, at the age of 19, he joined the crew of the conservation ship, Sea Shepherd, and on November 9, 1986, he and another activist, David Howitt, helped to scuttle two ships, the Hvalur 6 and Hvalur 7, accounting for half of Iceland's whaling fleet, which was whaling in contravention of the International Whaling Commission moratorium.

Coronado was convicted in December 2005 and sentencing took place on 7th August 2006. Coronado could have been sentenced to a maximum of 7 years. He has also been ordered to pay $100 restitution.

Matthew Crozier his co-defendant was convicted of the same charges and sentenced to three years probation and 100 hours of community service and fined $1,000.
